yungang temple
The Yungang Grottoes, located near Datong in Shanxi Province, China, are a magnificent example of ancient Chinese Buddhist temple grottoes. Carved during the Northern Wei dynasty, these grottoes are renowned for their exquisite rock-cut architecture and are one of the three most famous ancient Buddhist sculptural sites in China. The site, which was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001, features 53 major caves and over 51,000 statues, reflecting a masterful blend of Buddhist religious art from South and Central Asia with Chinese cultural traditions.
