During the late Heian Period, Pure Land Buddhism became widely embraced in Japan, offering adherents the promise of a place in the Western Paradise of Amida Buddha, or the Pure Land. As a result, gardens were designed to reflect this Buddhist paradise, such as the one at Motsu-ji Temple in Hiraizumi.
