otumba

Otumba de Gómez Farías, a town steeped in history, is renowned for its significant role during the colonial period as a major market for donkeys, which remain a cultural symbol today. Each year, the town celebrates this heritage with the Feria de Burros, a festival featuring donkey fashion shows, costume contests, and races. The town's name, derived from Nahuatl, means "place of the Otomis," honoring its indigenous roots and the Otomi people who found refuge there in the 1200s. Otumba's rich past is also marked by the Battle of Otumba, a pivotal event in the fall of Tenochtitlan during the Spanish conquest.
