mathildenhöhe
The Darmstadt Artists' Colony, established in 1899 by Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig, was a hub of Jugendstil, the German Art Nouveau movement. The artists of this colony, who were supported by patrons, created a unique blend of art and architecture at Mathildenhöhe, which served as their residential and work space. This area is renowned for its architectural innovation and is a testament to the early modern design movements. In recognition of its historical and cultural significance, UNESCO designated Mathildenhöhe as a World Heritage Site in 2021.
