hashima island

Hashima Island, also known as Gunkanjima or 'Battleship Island', is an abandoned island located off the coast of Nagasaki Prefecture in Japan. Once a bustling coal mining facility, it was deserted in 1974 when the mines were closed. Today, it stands as a haunting reminder of Japan's rapid industrialization, with its dilapidated concrete buildings and deserted streets. Despite its eerie atmosphere, it has become a popular tourist destination, offering a unique glimpse into a bygone era. The island was even recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2015, highlighting its historical significance.
