Gernika, officially known in Basque as Gernika-Lumo, is a town steeped in history and culture, located in the Biscay province of the Basque Country, Spain. Founded in 1366, it has been a symbol of Basque traditions and freedoms, particularly represented by the iconic Gernikako Arbola, or the Tree of Gernika. The town is also famously associated with the tragic bombing in 1937 during the Spanish Civil War, which inspired Pablo Picasso's renowned painting 'Guernica'. Today, Gernika continues to be a place of great historical significance and a testament to peace and resilience.
