fort calgary
Fort Calgary, established in 1875, was a strategic North-West Mounted Police (NWMP) outpost located at the confluence of the Bow and Elbow rivers. It played a crucial role in the efforts to establish law and order in the region, curtail the illegal whisky trade, and foster relations with Indigenous peoples. The fort was renamed from its original designation, Fort Brisebois, to Fort Calgary in 1876, and it became a significant site in the development of the city of Calgary. Although the original structures were demolished in 1914, the site's historical importance was recognized when it was designated a National Historic Site in 1925, ensuring its preservation for future generations.
