Fes el Bali, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the oldest walled part of Fez, Morocco, and was indeed founded as the capital of the Idrisid dynasty between 789 and 808 AD. This ancient district, along with Fes Jdid and the French-created Ville Nouvelle, forms one of the three main districts of Fez. The history of Fes el Bali is rich with cultural and educational advancements, including the establishment of the University of Al-Karaouine in 859, considered by UNESCO and Guinness World Records as the oldest continuously operating university in the world.
