el jadida

El Jadida, once known as the Portuguese fortification of Mazagan, is a remarkable example of the exchange between European and Moroccan cultures. Built in the early 16th century, this fortified colony on the Atlantic coast of Morocco showcases the Renaissance military design with its bastions and ramparts. It's particularly noted for its cistern and the Church of the Assumption, which reflect the late Gothic Manueline style of architecture. After being taken over by the Moroccans in 1769, El Jadida has preserved these historical structures, which today stand as a testament to the city's rich and diverse heritage.
