arc de triomphe
The Arc de Triomphe de l'Étoile is a monumental symbol of French national pride. Commissioned by Napoleon in 1806 after his victory at Austerlitz, it took 30 years to complete. Its intricate sculptures and friezes depict French military victories and honor those who fought for France, especially during the Napoleonic Wars. Beneath its vault lies the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, added in 1921, which bears an eternal flame, commemorating the dead of the two world wars who were never identified.
