abbey of st gall

The Abbey of Saint Gall, a remarkable historical site in St. Gallen, Switzerland, was founded in the 8th century and became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983. This former Benedictine abbey is renowned for its stunning library, one of the oldest monastic libraries in the world, housing a vast collection of medieval manuscripts. Although the abbey was secularized around 1800, its cathedral, with its distinctive Baroque architecture, continues to serve as the center of the Catholic Diocese of Saint Gallen.
