abbey and altenmünster of lorsch

Lorsch Abbey, a former Imperial abbey located in Lorsch, Germany, is a site of significant historical and architectural importance. Founded in 764, it quickly became one of the most influential monasteries of the Carolingian Empire. Its remains, particularly the Torhalle or gatehouse, are prime examples of pre-Romanesque–Carolingian style architecture. The Lorsch Codex, created there in the 1170s, is a pivotal document of early medieval German history. Recognizing its value, UNESCO designated Lorsch Abbey as a World Heritage Site in 1991.
